IMPORTANT UPDATE for Virtual Yale Station Users:
All @aya.yale.edu email addresses were migrated to the new YaleMail service in February, provided by Google Apps for Education. Reset passwords and instructions were sent to all VYS users who had not yet activated their YaleMail accounts on February 25-26. Please check the email account to which your VYS mail was set to forward for a message from firstname.lastname@example.org with subject line "UPDATE: YaleMail - Google Activation Email - password reset."

YaleMail is a Yale-branded email service for alumni on the Google Apps for Education platform, offering a dependable, easy-to-use, fully-functional web-based email account on the Gmail platform. Users of the service can access their email from anywhere in the world via an Internet connection. You can also send emails using your @aya.yale.edu alumni address as the “from” address.
If requesting a new YaleMail account, please log into your profile within the online directory and go to the YaleMail tab at the bottom of your profile page. Click the Edit button on the right, and follow the instructions on the next screen. You will need to provide another email address to which the Google activation instructions and a temporary password will be sent.
No. YaleMail, the new Yale-branded alumni email service is a fully-functional web-based email account on the Gmail platform. You will be able to access your inbox from anywhere in the world via the web or handheld device, just as with any other Gmail account. You can also send emails using your @aya.yale.edu alumni address as the “from” address, which was not possible when using VYS with many email clients.
To use the YaleMail service and have an @aya.yale.edu address, you will need to have a YaleMail Gmail account. If you used the Virtual Yale Station forwarding service but do not with to use YaleMail, please email AYA and let us know you would like us to deactivate your @aya.yale.edu address.

Why does it say I need a Google for Work account? What do I do next?
Our aya.yale.edu account is a Google Apps for Education account which is a subset of Google Apps for Work. If available, please select “add an account” and proceed to enter your @aya.yale.edu email address and password. If you do not see “add an account” but have a “learn more” option, please select the “learn more” at which point, you should have the “add an account” option to select.

Yes, you can easily forward emails sent to your @aya.yale.edu account to any address you choose. FYI for VYS users: Google requires that each YaleMail user set up email forwarding individually, so Yale was not able to set it up on behalf of alumni when creating the new accounts. To set up your new YaleMail account to forward your emails, please follow the instructions from this Gmail help page.
Yes. Once logged into your account, go to settings (gear icon on right), select Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Within the "Forward a copy of incoming mail," select delete Association of Yale Alumni's Mail's copy from the dropdown.
Gmail for consumers and Google Apps for Education both run on the same infrastructure, however, Google Apps is a separate offering that provides additional security, privacy controls for education, work, and government customers. Google Apps for Education services don't collect or use individual's data for advertising purposes or to create ad profiles. Google will never sell or share your personal information.

Yale implemented Google Apps for Education accounts for Yale College students (known as EliApps) in 2011 and has been satisfied with the service. As old infrastructure has been replaced, students in some professional schools and faculty in some departments/schools have also moved to EliApps.
The Virtual Yale Station forwarding service was discontinued on Thursday, February 25, 2016. To continue to use your @aya.yale.edu address, you must activate your YaleMail (Gmail) account and log into this account to access email messages sent to your @aya.yale.edu address.
With the transition, your current @aya.yale.edu address became a fully-functioning Gmail account, hosted by Google’s Apps for Education. In other words, the @aya.yale.edu email address you had previously remains the same. There is no need to update friends and subscriptions with a different email address.

Messages sent to your @aya.yale.edu address are waiting for you in your new YaleMail inbox. To access your messages in your YaleMail inbox, you will need to first activate the account and setup a new password. Please see the activation instructions above. Google requires that each YaleMail user set up email forwarding individually, so Yale was not able to set it up on behalf of alumni when creating the new accounts.
