An Evening with Dr. Michael Oren

Please join the Yale Club of Israel for an evening with Dr. Michael Oren, world-renowned Middle East historian and Senior Fellow at the Shalem Center of Jerusalem who was recently seen jamming at Jacob's Ladder on his bodhran, and taught at Yale last semester.

The talk, with Michael's own drum accompaniment, will be a kind of 'dispatch from the front' discussing Michael's recent experiences at Yale and the obstacles facing Israel Studies and alternative interpretations of the Middle East on American campuses today.

 Discussion and refreshments will follow.

Whiffenpoofs Israel Tour '08

WHIFFENPOOF A CAPPELLA SINGERS IN CONCERT IN JERUSALEM

On July 30, 2008, 8:00 pm, the world renowned Yale University Whiffenpoof singers will present a concert at the Jerusalem YMCA Auditorium. It has been eight years since the Whiffenpoofs were last in Israel, in the intervening time, however they have sung for Presidents, including George H. and George W. Bush and President Bartlett (on the "West Wing" television series). In addition to demanding annual concert schedules, where they have sung all over the United States, including Carnegie Hall, they have appeared on numerous television shows such as the "Jane Pauley Show", "Jeopardy", and "The Gilmore Girls". The Jerusalem concert is a "one performance only" part of their 2008 World Tour, which this year coincides with the Israel's 60th anniversary.

One can expect a unique evening of entertainment including innovative A Cappella arrangements of well known popular songs from different eras, punctuated by the characteristic playfulness of the tuxedo wearing, white glove clad, all-male Yale graduates singing in close harmony. The evening promises to include their trademark song, which features the readily recognizable line, "We are poor little lambs who have gone astray, baa, baa, baa . . ."

The concert will be held in benefit of the charities and projects of the Rotary Club of Jerusalem and the Whiffenpoofs Children's Literacy Initiative. Tickets are 70 NIS, available from Rotary Club members, Yale Alumni Club members or by phoning 02 643 5969 or 02 673 3882, or 054 533 1945

Ongoing Activities of The Club

  • Family Hosting
The Yale Club of Israel will coordinate housing for students or faculty while visiting  in Israel
  • Visiting Undergraduate Groups
Contact the Yale Club for assistance in coordinating activities and events during your visit
  • Speaking Overseas
If you've ever found yourself thinking "It's too bad most people only know Israel via the press" or "Somehow CNN's Christiane Amanpour and the BBC's Paul Reynolds just don't manage to convey who we really are",  here's your chance to do something about it.

Several Yale clubs around the world have expressed interest in hosting alumni from Israel to speak to their club.  If you are interested in chatting informally or presenting a short talk and have at least two weeks' advance notice of your trip, please contact David Mirchin: (dmirchin@meitar.com).
