Lecture by Forestry School Dean Gus Speth--April 10, 2008Gus Speth,'64 and '69 LLB, and now Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, will speak on "The Coming Transformation: America and the Environmental Crisis," starting at 7:00 pm. This talk will follow on to the topic of his new book, The Bridge at the Edge of the World: Capitalism, the Environment, and Crossing from Crisis to Sustainability. The lecture is free to the public, but reservations should be made. The number to call is 847-835-8261 to reserve a seat, or register online at www.chicagobotanic.org/school. The Botanic Garden facility has room for about 200+ and reservations are already coming in from Garden members, so early reservations are encouraged. The Chicago Botanic Garden is located on Lake-Cook Road in Glencoe. Gus Speth, a distinguished early leader of the environmental movement and of environmental institutions over the past four decades, is the founder and was President of the World Resources Council, and was a co-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council. He was also Chair of the UN Development Group. He was awarded Japan's Blue Planet Prize for "a lifetime of creative and visionary leadership in the search for science-based solutions to global environmental problems." A portion of the jacket blurb: "How serious are the threats to our environment? Here is one measure of the problem: If we continue to do exactly what we are doing, with no growth in the human population or the world economy, the world in the latter part of this century will be an unfit place in which to live. Of course human activities are not holding at current levels--they are accelerating, dramatically--and so, too, is the pace of climate disruption, biotic impoverishment, and toxification. In this book Speth, also author of the earlier Red Sky at Morning, begins with the observation that the environmental community has grown in strength and sophistication, but the environment has continued to decline, to the point that we are now at the edge of catastrophe." |
