Tutors Needed!

Since 1997, the Yale Club of Chicago has fostered a special relationship with the Elihu Yale Elementary School in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. Every week, volunteer tutors from the Yale Club meet with students to help improve their reading and math skills. In addition, Yale Club members have sponsored field trips, brought in a music educator, served as Principal for a Day, and donated athletic equipment and books to the school.

Tutors visit the school weekly for a two-hour period, typically between 12:30 and 2:30 PM on either Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. Tutors working in the Loop area count on spending a total of about three hours, including commuting, for their weekly visits. Carpooling from the Loop, North Side, Western and North Suburbs is available. The Principal, teachers and staff are friendly, warm, and highly enthusiastic about Yale Club tutors whom they view as valuable resources for their students. In this past year, tutors have been assigned to second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade classrooms.

The Elihu Yale School is located at 7025 South Princeton Avenue in one of Chicago's neediest neighborhoods. It serves a largely African-American student population of about 550, from preschool/kindergarten through eighth grade. In spite of its challenging location, the school is well maintained, clean and inviting.
