Deborah Johnson

We mourn the loss of our classmate, Deborah Johnson. Carol Mostow wrote, ....At this late hour I cannot write an obituary which does justice to Deborah Johnson, a dear friend, who faced life and her death from breast cancer with tremendous courage and wit. Many of her Yale friends stayed in touch during her final stages of battling her disease and attended her funeral. As Karen Nelson '78 said, Deborah taught us how to live and how to die. Along with her widower, Rex Welshon, her best friend, Judith Sanders '77 gave a eulogy at her funeral and can be contacted for more information.

Katharine Rexroth Leavitt

Katharine was a housemate of Carol Mostow's at Yale she describes her as a lovely and sensitive person. Carol saw her once during her medical training and knew she was a survivor of childhood cancer. She would welcome more news of her later years.

Anita Scheff

We mourn the loss or our classmate Anita Scheff. On March 31, 2001, Anita Scheff was killed in a car accident. According to her friend Tim DeWerff (>92), Anita had Aflown from San Francisco to New Haven in February to attend the Yale Glee Club's 140th Anniversary Reunion. She stayed with her parents in Manhattan for about a month and then set out for a cross-country drive back to California, staying with Glee Club friends along the way. On the afternoon of March 31 she was killed in a one-car accident on I-40 in northern Texas. She had looked forward to going on the Yale Alumni Chorus tour to Russia, where she had done humanitarian work in the early 1990s. Anita's younger brother, Bryan, says that friends may write their mother, Evelyn, at 210 East Broadway, Apartment #906, New York, New York 10002. Recently, Bryan reported that her monument has been inscribed "lux et veritas."

Kenneth Schwartz

We mourn the loss of our classmate Kenneth Schwartz, a healthcare lawyer. Carol Mostow wrote, ....[Before his death] he wrote a very moving front page article for the Boston Globe magazine re his experience as a cancer patient and the healing power of the caregiver relationship. He and his family formed the Kenneth B. Schwartz foundation to promote the patient-clinician relationship. Since his death, the Boston -based foundation has been very successful in supporting a wide range of endeavors which further Ken's vision. As I have told the Schwartz Center directors, every time I find a project or organization which supports the human dimension of medicine, I find that the Schwartz Center is supporting it. It supports the American Academy on Physician and Patient with which I am affiliated, intern support groups I run,diversity curriculum initiatives in my department, as well as a number of other activities with which I am involved. The loyalty and love of his family and friends is showcased at their annual dinner along with the incredible force for good which has emerged from their loss. See the Kenneth B. Maggie Wolf

We mourn the loss of our classmate Maggie Wolf, who died in June, 2001 as a result of breast cancer. She is survived by her son, Sam and her husband, Jeff Lowney, Yale '74.

Peter Woll

We mourn the loss of our classmate and friend Peter Woll who died of a heart attack on March 26, 2002. Pete, better known to many of us as "Skroll", will be sorely missed by family and friends. He is survived by his mother and son.
