Our visit to the opera
hit a high note!

Wednesday, we boarded the buses and headed up the mountain for our tour of the magnificent Santa Fe Opera House. The air was clear and the view was unbelievable. It was possible to see Los Alamos, 60 miles away.

The architecture of the Opera is striking and the mountaintop setting is magnificent.

Dave Ingalls, President and Board member of the Opera, enlightened us about the history and current operation of the Opera.

Breaking into smaller groups, each led by a Santa Fe Opera docent, we were able to go behind the scenes to see where the scenery and props were fabricated and stored. (That's John the Baptist's head on the plate.)

This "colossal" head was being carved from styrofoam.

Using models for each of the operas to be presented this season, the Stage Manager showed how the scenery is designed to permit rapid scene changes. The change from one opera to a different one can be accomplished in an hour and a half if necessary
