A letter from Daljit Jamwall
Jammu, India 23rd October 2002

From mid-December to mid-February last, I was with my daughter Gitanjali and her family, presently residing in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. It was a very pleasant diversion from me and I had the opportunity to visit several places in the Malaysian peninsula, including the island of Penang. To me it was also an eyeopener to find amidst our poor neighbourhood a country that was fully developed with excellant infrastructure by way of roads, highways, cyber-cities, modern buildings, skyscrapers (including the tallest - Petronas twin towers), tonish resorts and top multinational companies with their local production centres and/or offices.

On my return, I spent a few hours with classmate Lim Kay-Kok and his family in Singapore. He was kind enough to drive me round the city for a bit of sightseeing too. Back here, I found several letters and brochures inviting me to participate in the class’ golden jubilee celebrations, which I could not unfortunately attend. However, it was very nice to receive the University’s gift of a special Yale tie as a momento and also the golden anniversary Class Book, which is very well compiled indeed, and made nostalgic reading. In particular, I remember the vast Silliman College quadrangle/court, the nearby Sheffield, Stirling Strathcona Hall and Mason (ME) Laboratory. Apart from Lim, who I met in Singapore recently (and on an earlier occasion in Calcutta), the write-ups in the Book of particular interest to me were of Steve Tsai, fellow engineer, and I recall our sessions in the Mason Laboratory, Dick Boyle with whom we hitchhiked to Washington, D.C. and stayed with his brother(in U.S. Navy) and had the opportunity to visit the Pentagon, where I remeber those inclined wide walkways (in lieu of steps) connecting one floor to the other, and Dave Johnston, who took me to his parent’s house in Connecticut for a weekend.

My daughter, Gitanjali’s elder son, Manvendras Pathania, studying at Grinnett College (Iowa). He had tried Yale but was apparently not lucky to get any scholarship there.
